our history

African Methodism in Tipton County, Tennessee dates back as far as the early nineteenth century. In 1876, in the community of Dixonville in Tipton County, an itinerant preacher, Rev. Greer, built Greer Chapel AME Church. Some of the first members of this fledging congregation were Hardy Wesson, Jim Sneed, Elmore Walker, Tildy Gray, Meil Wesson, Rachel Dixon, Jim Dixon, Tebbie Miles, Melinda Strong, Ben Grady, Lizzie Widdie, Bryant Brown, Marshall Ewell, and Harvey Wesson.

In 1909 a new church was built by the Wessons and the Brown brothers. At this time the name was changed to Mt. Herman African Methodist Episcopal Church at the suggestion of Mrs. Liza Witty. In the years following the church was repaired by Jim Dixon, Andrew Wherry, Spencer Jamison (Church Secretary), and Freddie Tuggle (Church Treasurer).

In 1938 worship services were moved to the Dixonville School due to significant damage that was done to the building. During this time the Rev. Wilbur was sent to serve as pastor. Under his administration the church was restore and worship resumed in the sanctuary.

In 1963, Mt. Herman AME Church was completely rebuilt by Bro. Obie Brown with the assistance of Bro. Dan Wright. In May 1979, under the adept leadership of Rev. Edward Lee Thompson, Mt. Herman was once again remodeled. Under the leadership of the Rev. Kirk Ridley, Mt. Herman climbed to even higher heights using the motto, “God can take a little amount and will do wonderful things for his servants”. During this time Mt. Herman became a singular station in the West Tennessee Conference, where it was previously part of a circuit.

In 1989 new pews and stained glass windows were installed as part of an $11,000 beautification project. In 1995, the Rev. Lucian Hill, Jr. was sent to Mt. Herman. Under his leadership a fellowship hall was added inclusive of new kitchen facilities, pastor’s office, church office, and new restrooms. During the summer of 1997 the church was able to travel to Historic Mt. Zion AME Church of Jacksonsville, FL. This was the first trip of its kind taken by Mt. Herman. As Mt. Herman entered the twenty-first century more improvements were made to the church, the greatest of which was the paving of the parking lot, which was completed by the Rev. Anthony Branch and paid off under the leadership of Rev. William L. Smith. The parking lot was restriped in 2019.

During the pandemic Mt. Herman installed a new marquee and gutters at the entrance of the fellowship hall. Repairs of the sanctuary floor began in 2021 with floor refinishing and new carpet installation occurring in January 2022 under the current pastor, Rev. Joy Wilkerson Yancy, who continues to guide us to look to the hills from where all our help comes.
